The joy, in my small opinion, is observing the strength and power that the colors have developed over the years. The painter's eye has most definitely grown. No longer a timid application but a certainty of brush stroke as the painter moves thoughtlessly through the painting - pausing now and again to think, "Wow. I wonder where that came from?" Doesn't get any better than that.
